The city was founded in 1565
by Diego de Villarroel under the name of San Miguel Arcángel, in the fields
of Ibatín, place from where it was 120 years later moved to the
place called La Toma by Fernando Mate de Luna. On September 27th,
1685
the ceremonies for its new foundation took place.
San Miguel de Tucumán, its
capital, is quite active as long as commertial and industrial activity is
concerned. The same can be said about its intense nightlife, which is reflected
in its discos, restaurants, cafeterias and casino, appart from its promenades,
squares and parks which undoubtedly also stand out.
Tucuman's economony is
mainly based on the cultivation and
processing of sugar cane, being the first productor in the country. The
mills are truly industrial centres employing several workers who turn tons of
sugar cane into sugar, sugar honey and alcohol. Among the cultives, Tucuman also
produces sorghum, soybean, wheat, tobacco, citrics and others.
Its condensed geography
offers the tourist a remarkable variety of landscapes. To the East lie the vast plains, and to the West there are the mountains, among which the Mounts Calchaquíes
and the Aconquija snowy peaks stand out. On the Eastern sides of the sierras
a forest of an incredible beauty made up by a multitude of yellow
woods, Tucuman
cedars, lapachos, laurels, walnut trees and other minor species develops. To the East,
the landscape is plain, peppered with some small woods. The central part, crossed
by the Sali river is an ideal land for the development of agriculture due to the
fertile soil and the apropriate climate.
The multiplicity of tourist
possibilities that Tucumán offers, will give the tourist who chooses to visit
it, without doubt, unforgettable days for relaxation.
