Argentina offers a world of possibilities for the lovers of sporting fishing. As it has a large climatic diversity and multiple scenaries, appart from being immersed in unparalleled landscapes, the alternatives are numberless:

  • More than 3500 km. of coasts over the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Plentiful rivers such as the Paraná, Uruguay, Salado, De la Plata, Pilcomayo, Bermejo, Colorado, and Negro, among others.

  • Numberless lakes, rivers, and mountain streams. 

  • A large quantity of ponds and plains water courses. 

  • A large amount of artificial dams embedded in varied scenaries.

This data gives an idea of the variety of alternatives that our country offers for the sporting fishermen. 
Here we will give a panorama of the possibilities that each of the tourist regions offer for sporting fishing:


Northwest

In this region, the tourist will come accross three different scenaries. Plentiful rivers, mainly in plain zones; dams and ponds (in plain and mountaineous zones); and mountain rivers and streams.

Large River
Salta: the Pilcomayo, Bermejo and Juramento rivers where it is possible to obtain Dorados, Surubíes, Manguruyúes, Pacúes, Bogues, etc.

Dams and Ponds
Salta: Cabra Corral, Campo Alegre, Las Lomitas, Mojorojo and Las Maderas. Herring smelts, Catfish and Carps can obtained.
Jujuy: In La Ciénaga, Las Maderas, Alisos, Catamontaña, pond of Yala, Rodeo and Comedero. You can mainly obtain Herring smelts.
Santiago del Estero: Río Hondo, Los Quiroga and La Dormida. Catfish, Bogues,Tarariras, American shads and Dorados.
Tucumán: Angostura, Escaba, Cadillal, Frontal and El Cajón. Mainly Herring smelts, and also Carps, Catfish, Tarariras and Salmonids can be obtained.
Catamarca: El Jumeal, Ipizca, Motegasta, Las Pirquitas, Collagasta, La Cañada, Sumampa, Sauce Mayo. You can find Herring smelts and Rainbow trouts.
La Rioja: Los Sauces , El Cisco , Anzulón , El Saladillo , El Portezuelo, De Pinchas, De Olta. Mainly Herring smelts, Perch and Catfish.

Mountain rivers and streams
In numberless water courses of the provinces of Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, Catamarca and La Rioja it is possible to obtain Salmonids, and mainly Rainbow trouts.


Northeast

This is one of the most important regions of the country for the practice of sporting fishing. Here you can find huge rivers such as the  majestic Paraná,  the Uruguay, Pilcomayo, Bermejo, Paraguay, Dulce, Salado, Iguazú, and some others; where species of considerable size (more than 20 kg.) such as the Dorado, the  Tararira, the Surubí and Manguruyú delight the crowds of fishermen.
During the month of August, in Corrientes, The Dorado National Celebration takes place. It is the most important world famous national tournament of the country. 

Chaco
The Bermejo and Lagunas rivers offer the possibility of obtaining Tarariras and other species. In the Paraguay and Paraná rivers you can get Bogues, Pacúes, Surubíes, Maguruyúes and other species. 

Formosa
The Pilcomayo, Bermejo and Paraguay rivers, where you can find river Croakers, Dorados and Surubíes.

Santiago del Estero
The Dulce and Salado rivers provide Catfish, Bogues, Tarariras, American shads and Dorados.

Santa Fe
The Paraná, Salado, ponds and some other small rivers provide Dorados, Surubíes, etc.

Misiones
Paraná, Iguazú, and other small rivers.

Corrientes y Entre Ríos
The Paraná, Uruguay, ponds and other small rivers, where the tourist can obtain Dorados, Surubíes, Pacúes, Moncholos, Herring smelts, etc.


Cuyo

In this mountaineous region, the fishing of salmonids is fundamental,  and the places to carry out this activity are the artificial dams, and the natural ponds, rivers and streams. 

Dams
Mendoza: Agua del Toro, El Carrizal, El Nihuil, Los Reyunos and Valle Grande, where it is common to get specimens of Salmonids, Herring smelts, Perchs and Catfish.
San Juan: Valle Fértil, Ullum, where you can obtain Herring smelts and Yellow catfish

Ponds
Mendoza: Atuel, Blanca, Diamante, Del Valle, Llancanelo and Sosneado, where it is possible to obtain specimens of Salmonids and Herring smelts.
San Juan: Del Batidero, Chica, Blanca, Gunancache, De Los Antas, Del Tronco, De las Garzas, Del Padre, Portezuelo, Rincón, Rosario and Silverio.

Rivers and Streams
Mendoza: Atuel, Diamante, Grande, Mendoza, Tunuyán and other smaller rivers and streams, where you can obtain, mainly, species of Salmonids.
San Juan: San Juan, Castaño, and other smaller streams and rivers, where you can mainly obtain species of Salmonids.


Central Sierras

This region of sierras posseses a large number of rivers, streams, artificial dams and natural ponds to practise sporting fishing both in Cordoba and San Luis. 

Dams and Ponds
Here you can obtain specimens of Herring smelts, Carps, Perchs and Trouts among others.
Córdoba: San Roque, El Cajón, Los Molinos, Cruz del Eje, Río Tercero, Ing. Allende and La Quebrada, among others.
San Luis: San Felipe, Potrero de los Funes, Cruz de Piedra, Dique Chico, La Huertita, Luján, La Florida and El Volcán, among others.

Rivers and Streams
IThere are an infinity of rivers and streams where you will find Herring smelts, Perchs and Trouts (these last two species can be found in the higher water courses).


Pampean Plains

In this region we can identify two big divisions: fishing in rivers and ponds, and the type of fishing that takes place in the coast over the Atlantic Ocean. 

Rivers and Streams
The most important basin of this region is that of the Paraná river, the Paraná Delta and the Río de la Plata, although we do find some other important rivers such as the Salado (Buenos Aires) and the Colorado (La Pampa). Besides, there are numberless streams and rivers of lesser importance.
Within the Paraná and the delta basin we find Bogues, Armados, Dorados and Surubíes. In the Río de La Plata you can practise fishing out of the industrial zone, for it is polluted. Within the other rivers already mentioned we can find Herring smelts, Carps and other species.
In the zone of the Ventana Sierras we can obtain Trouts.

Ponds
There are a large number of Trouts all along the territory of the Pampean plains. Among the most important ponds we can mention those of Chascomús, Lobos, San Miguel del Monte, Guaminí and Salada Grande (Buenos Aires); and Don Tomás, Blanca Grande, Larga and La Amarga (La Pampa). In these ponds the most common varieties are the Herring smelt and, in second place, the Carp.
We can also find the Mar Chiquita pond, a lagoon (a pond that gets into the sea) where it is possible to obtain specimens of  Atlantic soles and mullets, appart from the classical Herring smelt.

Atlantic Coast
The Atlantic Ocean littoral offers many possibilities for fishing, both from the coast or pier of the different beach resorts or embarked.
The species that can be obtained are the following: Black-mouth and Fair croaker, (with specimens of about  20 kg.), Herring smelt, Pomfrets and others. If you prefer fishing embarked: Bluenose warehou, Argentine seabass, Sea salmon,  Forkbeard, Patagonic mullet, Sharks (which can weigh more than 100 kg.) and many others.


Andean Patagonia

This mountaineous region, with a large number of lakes and rivers, is the special place for fishing salmonids.
The variety and quality of these salmonids are highly appreciated. This region posses several places to carry out this activity and some of them are considered to be among the best in the world. 

Neuquén
The Correntoso river and the mouth of the Chimehuín river are the best places in the world for the fishing Rainbow and Brown trouts.There were cases of specimens of about 10 kg.
Besides, there are other rivers (such as the Limay) and several lakes where the possibilities of getting  salmonids are quite high: Aluminé, Correntoso, Lácar, Traful (where we find Closed Salmon), Falkner, Filo Hua Hum, Huechulafquen, Paimún, Pichi Traful, Nahuel Huapi, Tromen, Villarino, etc.

Río Negro
This zone comprises a large quantity of rivers and lakes where you can obtain the following varieties of salmonids:
Rainbow, Brown and Brook trouts, and Closed Salmon. We can also find Perchs and  Patagonic Herring smelt.
Among the rivers we can mention the Limay and among the lakes the Fonck, Hess, Gulielmo, Gutiérrez, Mascardi, Moreno, Nahuel Huapi, Roca, Steffens and Martín, among others.

Chubut
Just as the other provinces of the region, Chubut comprises, in its Andean zone, a large variety of rivers and lakes for fishing salmonids and other species.
Among these species we find: Rainbow trouts, Silver salmon, Brook trout, Criolla trout, Brown trout, Herring smelt (inferior bed of the Chubut river).
Among the lakes we can mention the Epuyén, General Paz, Menéndez, Futalaufquen, Fontana, La Plata and others.
There are numerous rivers, but the most important ones are the Chubut and the Futaleufú.

Santa Cruz
In the Gallegos, Santa Cruz rivers and other smaller rivers and streams we can find quite big brown trouts and perchs. 
In the numerous lakes of the province such as the Argentino, Viedma, Buenos Aires and San Martin, we can find good examples of salmons, Rainbow, Streams, and Brown trouts, Perchs and Herring smelt.

Tierra del Fuego
In the Lapataia, Pipo, Olivia, Turbio, Claro, Ewan, San Pablo, Fuego, Candelaria, Mac Lennan, De la Turba, Bella Vista, Grande and Chico rivers, Fagnano, Yehuin and Mellizas lakes we can obtain good specimens of Fontinalis, Brown and Rainbow trouts and also Sebago salmon.


Atlantic Patagonia

In Patagonia, all along the Atlantic Ocean littoral there are several possibilities for fishing, both from the coast and embarked 
The species we can obtain are the following: Fair and Black-mouth croakers (with specimens of about 20 kg.), Herring smelt, Pomfrets and others. If you prefer fishing embarked: pez limón, Argentine seabass, Sea salmon, Antarctic butterfishl, Fork beard, Patagonic mullet, Sharks (that cab weigh more than 100 kg.) and many others.

Neuquén
The Correntoso river and the mouth of the Chimehuín river are the best places in the world for fishing Rainbow and brown trouts. There were cases of specimen of about 10 kg.

Río Negro
The Atlantic littoral of Rio Negro posseses , all along its coasts, many possibilities for the practice of sporting fishing. Golden croakers, Black-mouth croakers , Herring smelts, Weak fish, Patagonic mullet, False salmons, Argentine hakes, pelagic sting rays, Argentine conger, Anchovy, Mackarels, and other species can be obtained.
As regards the places apt for fishing, we can mention: El Cóndor beach resort (in the zone of Los Pozones and El Pescadero),  Bonita Beach (with a natural rocky breakwater of 80 m. into the sea), La Lobería and Bahía Creek.
Submarine hunting is succesfully practised in  los Loros and Nuevo León coves,  Los Lobos islet, point Pozos, point Sierras and point Pórfidos.

Chubut
Vast sand or stony beaches are ideal places for fishing from the coast. Here there are plenty of species such as the Herring smelt, Patagonic mullet, Flathead fish, hog fish and also rays and sharks.
In the deep rocky coasts we find Argentina seabass, Salmons, turkish fish, White stumpnose, Escrófalo and Fork beard.

Santa Cruz
In the zone of Puerto Deseado we find Lenguado, Patagonic mullet, Abadejo, Sea Salmon and Shark.
In the zone of Puerto San Julián we find Patagonic mullet, Abadejo, Argentine seabass and Shark.
In the zone of Puerto Santa Cruz and Río Gallegos we find Argentine seabass, Abadejo, Herring smelt, Argentine seabass, Fueguina sardine, Ray, Mackarel and Shark.

Santa Cruz
In the Grande river, and others next to it, there exists different varieties of Trouts.
