This city was founded by Juan
Torres de Vera y Aragón, on April 3th, 1588, in the turn of the Paraná river
formed by seven points of land which, moving up its river bed, produce many
other water currents. This place configuration, joined to the name of its
founder determined its primitive name: San Juan de Vera de las Siete Corrientes
(San Juan de Vera of the Seven Currents).
Sorrounded by important rivers such as the Paraná, Uruguay and some other
less important ones, Corrientes presents, in its central part, a plain land
liable to flooding covered by swampy lands and ponds.
The capital city peppers the colonial style of its neighbourhoods with modern
buildings of advanced designs, all of which blend armonically with
its characteristic vegetation in streets and parks: chivatos, ceibos, orange
trees, jacarandas and the pale pink of the samohú.
Here the tourists have the possibility of
carrying out their purchases in pretty shops, going to restaurants and
cafeterias, visiting the Casino or simply walking through the splendid Costanera
avenue.
What reaches its most outstanding point is the celebration of Carnival, which
has become one of the funniest and most gorgeous celebrations in the country.
The joy spreads all along the streets when, amid an undescribable boisterous
frolic, the caravans parade with luxurious costumes.
In this way, Corrientes, the Paraná's girlfriend, offers the tourist the most
varied possibilities for relaxation, enjoyment and entertainment, making
their staying here a pleasurable and happy circunstance.
